One of Merivale’s historical homes has won the best residential home award in the prestigious Merivale House Awards 2014. The winning home, named the Moorings House had been owned by Harry and Ngaire McLernon for more than 25 years. The Rugby St home was also awarded the judges special award for the most outstanding home. Homeowner, Ngaire McLernon said receiving the award had been a great surprise. This Wednesday the McLernons would have a tour group from Japan visiting to look at the gardens. It was the first time the couple have had tour groups visit since the earthquakes. The house was complete with a full orchard, including pears, apples, bluberries and cranberries, and a variety of stone fruits. The McLernons were awarded a painting of the house, which they

being put on hold by the earthquakes. Merivale Precinct Society chairman Chris Aynsley said they were back to stay.

The judging panel consisted of society chairman Chris Aynsley, deputy chairwoman Denise Leighs, board member David Compton-Moen, Harcourts Holmwood Merivale sales consultant Cindy-Lee Sinclair, and director of Dalman Architecture Ltd, John McGrail. Last Monday, about 90 people turned up for the event at Merivale Mall. More than 25 residential and commercial premises were in the running. The three main categories in the awards were for the best residential home, best renovated home, and best commercial premises in the Merivale area. • Turn to page 2

Bishopdale Park. It was the fifth year Cotswold School pupils have been collecting rubbish at the park. The school’s eco-crusaders were children who volunteered one lunchtime a week to monitor the rubbish at Cotswold School and also helped out in the community. The children said they found mainly tissues, lolly wrappers and food wrappings, but also wood with nails sticking up. The team of Luka Lee, 9, Ethan Fairley, 8, Reuben Mountford, 10, Caleb Johnson, 10, and Luke Walker 10 collected the most rubbish on the day and were amazed at how many firework wrappers they found.

A volunteer group catering to more than 1000 people each month is finally getting the support it needs. The Northgate Community Services Trust is a volunteer organisation which provides food, mental support and low-cost health care to the unemployed, the disabled, single parents and others who are unable to maintain a reasonable standard of living in the wider Papanui community. The group has been running since 2003 and community support has seen the group recently received four new stoves. Community development coordinator, Karen Watson, said a fully functioning kitchen was vital for the support group, which held cooking classes four days a week to provide basic cooking skills to those in need. She said the kitchen was used for a large variety of events. “We’ve had four rumpty old stoves which have all been handme-downs,” she said. At the Shirley-Papanui Community Board meeting on Wednesday, the community board funded the group with one of four stoves as part of the group’s Upgrade Stoves project. Board chairman Mike Davison said they were happy to fund such a good cause. Two of the other new stoves had been funded by Pub Charity, and one from the Northcity Church.

Quake-damaged church to go BY GRACE CABELL

A church which stood on the same grounds for more than 160 years is soon to be demolished. The earthquake-damaged Papanui Methodist Church, on Chapel St and Harewood Rd, is set to be demolished on December 1. A new church would be rebuilt on the same site, with building to begin in February 2015. The church was likely to be completed by December that year. For more than three years now, Papanui Methodist parishioners have been sharing the parish centre with St Joseph’s Catholic Church parishioners on Main North Rd. The St Joseph’s church was also due to be demolished in January 2015. Papanui Methodist parish steward, Pat Teague, said members were tired of having to use another location, and welcomed the idea of a new church. “It’s been hard work really. You’ve got people and groups in different places having to cart everything there,” she said. She said she was delighted to be able to have the new church built on the same site. St Joseph’s church parish priest, Father John Adams, said it has been great sharing the space. “The only arrangement was that they did not give us any money. It’s not about the cash it’s about Christian unity,” he said. Changes to the new Papanui

Pupils at Cathedral Grammar School have devoured tubs of ice cream for fundraising. As part of the Ronald McDonald House South Island ‘Cream it for kids’ fundraiser, pupils helped to raise funds for the charity by purchasing a 100ml tub of Tip Top’s vanilla ice cream. The school’s board of senior students, which manages fundraising events, decided to take part in the event for the learning experience and as an opportunity to contribute to the community. Cathedral Grammar School head girl and BOSS committee member, Amber Spurway, said the fundraiser was a great way for the senior pupils to show leadership by taking charge of organising of the event. “We like to work closely with Ronald McDonald House South Island because our students understand what they do for families and we think it’s important to

Don’t be afraid to speak out

Rob Woolley put off living his life because of his stuttering. Now he is the New Zealand regional director of the McGuire Programme, a company which aims to help people overcome stuttering. Last month Mr Woolley was named Toastmaster of the Year 2014. Reporter Grace Cabell spoke to him about growing up with a stutter, and learning to overcome his fears. Rob, tell me a bit about yourself, did you grow up in Christchurch? I live in Hornby but I was born in Lower Hutt, I moved to Christchurch in 1994. Originally I was a horse trainer in Hutt Park Raceway. I moved down here to work with various trainers in the South Island and continued to train racehorses until 1999. Essentially I came down here because if you wanted to further your career in harness racing you had to come here. Why did you choose to race horses? I trained racehorses because of my stutter. I used to say it was okay around horses, because horses didn’t care about my stutter [Laughs]. After that I decided to get a real job. In 1996 I worked at Meadow Mushrooms. Then I went overseas, and when I came back I worked at Marley New Zealand Ltd – a plastics company in Hornby. Then I became selfemployed as an antique dealer in 2003 and I’m still doing that.

When did you first notice your stuttering? I didn’t announce words properly in pre-school but then after that I was fine. When I was about nine a speech therapist came around to the school and she told my grandparents, who raised me, I had a stutter. Once someone told me I was a stutterer I became a stutterer. I kind of knew there was something in my speech but essentially I was the most extroverted person in the class back then.

How did you feel hearing that you were a stutterer? It was probably the worst thing anyone had ever said to me. I honestly think if no one had said anything I would have been fine – but you don’t know. How much did it affect you growing up? I did speech therapy until 16 or 17 and got worse every year. It affected my life because you feel anything relating to a speaking situation you can’t do. I would never have ever gone to university because of my stutter.

If you wanted to join athletics clubs and stuff like that you would have to tell them your name and your details. I always got someone to come along and speak for me – sometimes that is so embarrassing you just avoid doing it. What prompted you to change your stuttering? I decided to do something about my stutter after something I saw on TV. In 2004 a Close Up show featured the McGuire Programme, which helps people overcome stuttering. But it took me about two years to decide whether to do it. • Turn to page 10

Learn to overcome the fears • From page 9 So how did you get more involved in the McGuire Programme? I took my first course in 2008. It’s essentially a four-day course but you can go back and do as many refresher courses as you would like. It pushes you out of your comfort zone and challenges your speech. Last year I became regional director of the McGuire Programme for the whole of New Zealand. It was kind of weird actually, ever since I got involved in 2006 I saw myself as running it. Did the earthquakes affect your stuttering at all? It didn’t make my stutter worse – what happened though is in my job as an antique dealer I had an opportunity to do Earthquake Commission valuations for people. I found it quite interesting that people would ring me unsure and nervous about what to do and that was generally how I used to approach situations as a stutterer – so now I was a person who was trying to calm them down. That was quite an interesting turn around. So you’re involved in Toastmasters as well? Yes. Basically that for me was an opportunity to challenge my new speaking technique in front of other people. Most do it to improve their public speaking skills, presentation skills and develop more self confidence. October 22 was actually International Stutter-

SPEAK OUT: Rob Woolley speaks to stutterers about how to get over their fears. ing Awareness Day, and just the weekend before that I was awarded the Toastmaster of the Year award. How has overcoming your stuttering changed your life? The thing with stuttering is that it’s like anything people fear. They may want to lose the fear and overcome that fear, but too many people are apprehensive about approaching the fear. In order to overcome a stutter you have to tell people that you stutter – place yourself in situa-

tions you might stutter. In a way it’s like putting your finger into a power socket and convincing yourself if you keep doing it long enough it won’t hurt. And that’s why if I avoid a speaking situation, which I used to do all the time, I was actually convincing myself I would fail, so I did. How has the McGuire Programme helped you? If you follow the instructions, apply what is learnt, and challenge yourself to go back to those situ-

ations – that is the only way you can prove to yourself you can do it. It’s a bit like if you were scared of flying, we would have you flying a plane at the end of four days. The course itself is trying to work through that fear slowly, so at every stage people are now wanting to take that next step. Have you picked up any new hobbies since? Well essentially my hobbies now are speaking orientated. In a way the McGuire Programme is a hobby, and Toastmasters is a hobby. Do you have a family? Yes, I have a wife, Louise, who works in various pre-schools around Christchurch, and a sixyear-old daughter Bronté who goes to Sockburn School. What would you say to people who may have been in your position? In public speaking, as long as you make yourself a person who gets up there you will be fine. You can say whatever you want as long as you tell yourself you are in control. The one piece of advice apart from that you should try the programme, is that while you have a stutter, everybody else has their affliction as well. You are no better and no worse than anybody else and you shouldn’t let a stutter hold you back from anything you would like to do. Thank you for your time today, Rob.

Father, colleague remembered New school seating at St Michael’s Church School stands to remember a parent of three pupils who died in a car crash. Fixed seating has been placed in front of every classroom at the school as a part of a project by Fulton Hogan. The project was offered as a mark of respect for the former Fulton Hogan worker and father of three pupils at the school, Kevin Davies. In May this year Mr Davies of Belfast, was driving to work when his van slid off Bealey Rd near Darfield. Mr Davies had been a foreman carpenter for Fulton Hogan since 2010. After Fulton Hogan offered its services to the school, Mr Davies’ wife asked if the company would assist with a project for the school. A working bee was held by parents and staff to install the fixed seating, as well as a general clean-up of the school grounds. “It is heartening to see and feel this community spirit for the Davies family during such a difficult time,” said a school spokeswoman She said the school was extremely grateful for the generosity. Fulton Hogan not only offered its time for free but also covered all costs involved on the day, including materials for the seating, and bark for the playground.

A sausage sizzle was provided by the centre to raise funds for Belfast Plunket. The centre raised $110 on the day through gold coin donations. “It’s fabulous to be able to provide funds for our local community,” said Mrs Shatford. The centre had previously raised funds for charities, such as $255 for Cholmondeley Children’s Charity House. Parents from the centre had also supported the Salvation Army, where items TEAM: Todd Blackadder were donated to the food stands with Rory Stewart of bank for distribution. ABC Belfast.

Groups to benefit from Rotary club’s new home BY GRACE CABELL

TECHNOLOGY: As part of Marian College’s e-learning focus, year 13 student Elizabeth Everingham has been undertaking mentoring via video conferencing for her scholarship english examination. Elizabeth has had weekly mentoring sessions with her tutor, who is based in the North Island. She says the mentoring has worked really well “because english at scholarship level is very much discussion based so the syllabus lends itself to this type of learning”. Elizabeth plans to attend Canterbury University next year and major in english as well as completing a law degree.

Canterbury charities are set to benefit from a brand new four-bedroom home built by the Rotary Club of Avonhead. The club decided to build the house in Josephine Cres, Aidanfield, after looking at ways to increase interest for fundraising. All profits from the auction sale would go directly to Avonhead Rotary charitable trust. The home includes three heat pumps, underfloor heating and triple garaging on 864 sq m of land. The single-storey house would go up for auction on November 26 through Bayleys Canterbury. Past president and club member, John Ball, said the whole project took two and a half years to complete. “We had a lot of fun. As a hands-on project it has been excellent for members of the club, who are a bunch of geriatrics,” he said. Funds generated from the house sale would be distributed among many of the numerous Canterbury organisations which annually apply for funding from the trust. The charitable trust funded a range of medical, community and educational charities in Canterbury, ranging from Women’s Refuge to the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Barnardos. Last year the club held a golf tournament which raised more than $20,000. The money raised went to the Can-

Bayleys Canterbury director Bill Whalan said the property was being sold with a 10-year new home guarantee. He said potential buyers may be interested because of the neighbourhood location, use of long-last materials and amenities. “In essence, it is a show home – it’s like Christchurch’s very own version of the Block NZ,” Mr Whalan said. Open homes would be held by Bayleys Canterbury real estate agents Daryl and Barbara Johnston on Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons until the auction ran.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

A youngest ever national champion was crowned last week and it was only his first season in the sport. The National Offroad Racing Championship finals were held at West Melton over Labour Weekend with spills, thrills and a new champion found. Owen Chang, a 27-year-old mechanic who grew up in Aranui is now the youngest off-road racing national champion even though this was the first year he had ever raced. Chang said he was leading his class going into the weekend and was confident of winning that title but he never thought he would walk away as the national champion. “It was unreal and hard to believe really. There were so many fast, big cars and people that have been doing it for so long and I was only in my first season,” he said. Chang won three races in his car class as well as another podium. That third place finish came after he nearly rolled his GT Radial Ford Falcon at one point in a race. That put him at the back of that race after he was being pushed around by another car and hit a tyre. He said after that incident he “seen the red mist” and tried far

too hard to get back in the race and clipped another tyre almost flipping his car. The endurance race was cut short on the Sunday due to safety issues. Dust was being flung up and visibility was poor leaving officials no choice but to halt the race early. Chang said Sunday was quite scary because of the dust. He said there were “a lot of accidents” and the organisers absolutely did the right thing by cutting the race early. Owen’s father Bryan Chang said he was one very proud dad and

Lifelong rowing stalwart dies BY TOM DOUDNEY

SLICK: Rachel Woollett skating in the middle of the front row in the Kia Kaha team. The New Zealand champions are travelling to the Australian championships at the end of this month.

Aussie champs for skaters A Redwood teenager is part of a team about to head off to Australia to compete in their national competition.

Rachel Woollett, 15, from Papanui High School is part of the Kia Kaha synchronised figure ice skating team that will compete in the Australian National Ice Figure Skating Championships at the end of the month. The Kia Kaha team is formed from members of the Centaurus Ice

Skating Club which is based at Alpine Ice on Brougham St. The team gained entry to the Australian nationals by winning the New Zealand Ice Figure Skating Championships team event. Her team beat Synergice from Auckland by two points and will go up against Australia’s best in Brisbane from November 28. Rachel also competed in the South Island Ice Skating Championships last month where she picked up two gold medals for indi-

vidual performances. She won the gold medal in the freeskating and dance categories as well as the team gold in the synchronised competition with her Kia Kaha team. The Kia Kaha team is: Rachel Woollett, Liam McIver, Catherine Parkinson, Rowan Green, Brittany Bensemann, Chahna Davis, Varshana Schelling, Laura Taggart, Caitlin Usmar and Anna Winter with coaches Kim Lewis and Ann Campbell.

A lifelong stalwart and former captain of the Avon Rowing Club has died Keith Young, or ‘Speed’ as he was known at the club, was 90 when he died recently at the Bishop Selwyn Lifecare Centre. Avon Rowing Club past president John Wylie said Mr Young had been club captain when he joined 60 years ago. “He was a quiet, unassuming guy, very much involved with the club all his life, as were the whole Young family,” Mr Wylie said. “He never married and the club was very much his life.” Mr Wylie said Mr Young was “one of those unsung heroes” that sports clubs have. “He introduced a lot of us to the club, who are still associated.” Mr Young lived in the house his family had when he was born, at 30 Alexander St in Avonside, for 82 years before moving into the Bishop Selwyn

Lifecare Centre eight years ago due to ill health. Mr Young’s niece Louise Blatchford said he had been very attached to the house. “He had a beautiful garden out the back where he used to grow lots of lilies and carnations and had a very good vegetable garden and grew grapes and things.” Mrs Blatchford said a neighbour of his, David Henry, had lived next door to him for 60 or 70 years and died six months before Mr Young. Throughout Mr Young’s life he never held a passport or driver’s license, preferring to get around by bicycle. An aeroplane mechanic during World War 2, he worked at military bases around New Zealand. After the war he became a fitter and turner and worked at a foundry in Wainoni for many years. He was also a member of the Shirley Rugby League Football Club.

New collection creates elegance in natural fabrics

Renowned for its contemporary women’s fashion made from

all natural materials, JNBY New Zealand has introduced its most composed collection yet for Spring/Summer 2014-15.

J

NBY celebrates the elegance of women with its design-driven aesthetics and strong philosophy capturing the idea of beauty, comfort and style through the brand statement, “Just naturally be yourself ”. The new collection is in store now, and is showing minimalist, geometric lines, a myriad of textiles and a sportswear flair. A hint of romance comes via draped silk, and lightweight wool adds a modern elegance. Inspiration for design has come from vintage architecture, retro shapes, images and structures.

True

The sophistication of cool whites and creams are the key colour story for the season, highlighted with a jolt of cobalt blue. Hints of steel blue and washed rose beige add a different dimension, while bright yellow and orange notes accent the warm glow of summer.

The Architecture collection features neutral colour palettes with a strong sense of shapes and textures. The designs play with volume and shifting scales through the manipulation of fabrics and textures – a minimalist approach while creating sharp shapes and silhouettes.

hen children travel in vehicles, car seats are the best way to protect them. Keeping your child in ,their Tuesday, June 11, 2013 car seat with its harness system as long as possible is best. Once they grow out of the car seat, they need to move to a booster seat. • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. • Never use the booster seat with only a lap belt. • Place the booster seat in the back – it’s safer. • Avoid the front seat unless all other seating positions are being used. If you have to use the front seat, make sure it is as far back as possible. They must use a booster seat until they are around 148 centimetres tall.

Waimak team gets award for heritage preservation work At the Vero Canterbury Heritage Awards held in the newly-renovated Knox Presbyterian Church, the Waimakariri Landmarks Team received the Heritage Champion award. The Landmarks Programme was established in 2001 to recognise buildings, sites and structures of historic significance in the Waimakariri district. The programme is a partnership between the Waimakariri District Council, the Kaiapoi District Historical Society and the Rangiora and Districts Early Records Society. The aim of the landmarks team is to find historic information about each building that is researched. To date the team has placed 20

plaques on heritage buildings, some of which have since been lost as a result of the earthquakes. The Canterbury Heritage Awards are held every two years to recognise excellence in heritage retention and conservation, heritage tourism and heritage education. The Heritage Champion award is awarded for heritage advocacy by a group or individual in the preservation of a heritage, or wahi tapu site, or increasing public awareness of heritage and bi-cultural heritage issues. All award winners were presented with trophies designed by Christchurch sculptor Neil Dawson. Only six of the seven members of the landmarks team were present at the ceremony to receive the award.

Speedway action at Glen This weekend stockcar and sprintcar fans are in for a treat. Woodford Glen will host the North v South Stockcar Teams Challenge and then the Sprintcar War of the Wings on November 14 and 15. Two teams from the North Island have been confirmed to attend. Fireworks are beautiful as well as dangerous BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

HISTORY: (From left) – Ben, Hunter, Lions Club of Rangiora president Wayne Paulin, Swannanoa School teacher Jena Davidson, Lions Club of Rangiora members Mike Ruscoe and Doug Tait, Mayor Ayers, Ruby, Green Corps project co-ordinator Dan Cameron.

Pupils involved in reserve A group of 80 Swannanoa School pupils gathered at the Whites Road Reserve to present three interpretation panels they have been working on. The signs were created in partnership through the Waimakariri District Council’s Green Corps programme and the Lions Club of Rangiora. The panels are the result of a learning topic this year in term two, where the pupils were asked to look at ways to improve the Whites Road Reserve. The pupils researched, designed and developed the panels to show how the reserve was established, its history and some of its key features. The Lions Club of Rangiora had provided funding for the signs to be built and installed

as one of their 50th anniversary projects. Green Corps started in 2013 when Waimakariri District Council Parks and Green Space staff were looking for new ways to engage people with their parks and reserves in a more meaningful way. Since that time Swannanoa School, along with Clarkville School, Southbrook School, Rangiora New Life School and Rangiora High School have all become involved with Green Corps. Whites Road Reserve, Silverstream Reserve and Hegan Reserve were all benefiting from the students’ involvement through various projects such as native planting, improving native animal habitat, developing interpretive signage and designing the overall layout of some of the reserves.

This is being written the day after Guy Fawkes. Until this time there have been nine incidents in the city definitely attributed to misuse of fireworks. On the night itself there were also a couple of skips and a wheelie bin set on fire, quite possibly by idiots who wanted to keep on amusing themselves after the fireworks ran out. I know the vast majority of users were and are responsible in the way and place they set fireworks off. I know Guy Fawkes is an occasion that many of us would be unwilling to deny our kids the fun times we had. But this is really looking at the past with rosetinted spectacles, because November 5 invariably had reports of huge fire losses and eyes blinded. It’s inevitable that a full ban of private sales will happen in our lifetime. Most firefighters will rejoice.

The spectacle can still be there. The city council apparently put on another fabulous display at New Brighton this year. The pier on November 5 will continue growing as an iconic Canterbury event, and that’s great! It’s been colder this week, but last Sunday there was a nor’wester. It was hot, dry and very windy, which is not

f you weighed up the difference between Fair Dinkum brand sheds and others on the market, you would literally feel it. Fair Dinkum kitsets are 30 per cent heavier than many other brands, and that is because they are made from a thicker grade of steel, Christchurch franchise owner Brent Collins says. “Being thicker, the strength of the steel is greater, so the sheds are much stronger and more resistant to the elements,” Brent says. “For example, in the high winds of October 2013, which caused a lot of damage, not one of our sheds came down.” In fact, they carry an Australasian ShedSafe Accreditation, having passed independent analysis by an engineer with flying colours, and the main frame has a 50-year guarantee, he says. “They also easily meet the standards

of the New Zealand Building Code.” Another key advantage of Fair Dinkum sheds is that they are not sold in modular sizes, therefore restricting the options, but are computer designed and customised to suit specific size requirements. “All these advantages,” Brent says, “and we still manage to be highly competitive in the market.” Brent has a strong building industry background, having worked in the sector in England and New Zealand for the last 25 years, and therefore has a sound knowledge of building structure. He and his Fair Dinkum staff know their products inside out and can provide advice and information on what will best suit customers’ needs and budget. Their dedicated build team also has many years of industry experience and provide the

At the same time, the product can be applied to all manner of uses from farming to the industrial and residential sectors, he says. “This is aided by the endless types of designs that can be computer generated.” Fair Dinkum sheds are distributed by Durasteel, and since their inception, more than 180,000 Fair Dinkum sheds have been sold across Australia and New Zealand.

end user with what they consider to be the best finish on the market. Having purchased the Fair Dinkum franchise with his wife in 2010, Brent says many of his customers are people who have shifted away from urban Christchurch following the earthquakes. “People who moved out of red-zoned areas had a lot of choice about where to go and what to do, and a good percentage of them have gone into rural areas where they could afford a 10-acre block. In utilising their land, they need sheds, and some of them even convert a portion of their shed as housing until they build a new home.” However, Brent says a large part of his shed business comes from people that

he people who write advertising slogans are clever with words. They can make a simple frozen chicken hugely appealing. A clever wordsmith named Ed McCabe was paid a substantial fee to write these ten words, “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken”. This slogan for Perdue Chickens helped sell 15 million frozen chickens through American supermarkets in one year. Yes, the chickens were top quality meat. But the Perdue export department got it wrong. They translated the slogan into Spanish as “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate”. Hispanic and Mexican cooks were not amused.

e Wānanga o Aotearoa will be offering a range of weaving classes in 2015, an introductory 18week course, the Certificate in Māori Visual Arts and a 36-week Diploma in Māori Art - Toi Paematua. Emma Mclean is a current student of the Diploma. Two years ago Emma’s friend invited her to an exhibition run by Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Raranga (weaving) students. Emma loved what she saw so much she decided to ‘give it a go’. Emma said the most rewarding part of the course for her was stepping out of her ‘comfort zone’ and gaining ‘confidence’ presenting her work. “The tutors are awesome; they are always available to help, they give great feedback and bring so much knowledge and experience.”

Alan Spicer, another member of the Diploma class, says the course has been great for his selfesteem. “As a male, I have been encouraged and included. I enjoy the marae stays and I love the support offered by the tutors. It has been a great honour to study among a great group of weavers!”

he belief at Hagley College is that everyone should have the opportunity to learn and that these opportunities should be available throughout life. This is what the college’s After 3 programme creates: new opportunities for learning. These programmes are at a secondary learning level but with a difference. ‘‘Personalised learning is at the centre of how we work at Hagley,’’ says deputy principal Mike Fowler. ‘‘We know that students have many different reasons for engaging in study. Teachers in each After 3 course assist students to identify their personal goals to enhance the relevance of the learning to their particular needs. ‘‘Our After 3 courses build the skills and understandings needed to transition successfully into Senior College NCEA

programmes at Hagley, vocational pathways, or in some cases tertiary level programmes. Our After 3 teachers support students to identify and move in the direction they have identified as important.’’ After 3 gives adult and senior students the opportunity to study a wide range of Hagley’s courses away from their daytime commitments. Most courses run from early evening during the week and, in some cases,

in the weekend. ‘‘We offer over 50 courses in the faculties of art and media, community studies, English, English language learning, food and hospitality, health studies, languages, mathematics, performing arts and practical design (textiles and technology courses),’’ Fowlers says. ‘‘More than 750 students each year make the decision to study in After 3. We look forward to you making your own success story at Hagley in 2015.’’

Making dreams a reality

A

li Phillips has always known what her dream job would be. Through Aoraki Polytechnic she has been able to take the first steps along the path to making this a reality. Studying at Aoraki’s Christchurch campus, Ali is currently completing her second year of hairdressing, a Certificate in Professional Hairdressing, Level Three. “I have always wanted to be a hairdresser since I was little - it has been my passion for many years,” says Ali. “I had grown up doing hair, cutting my Barbie doll’s hair and generally fascinated with hairdressing.” With no experience in the industry, and having to balance study with the needs of her family as well, 26-year-old Ali found the perfect fit at Aoraki. “I’d been looking for a hairdressing course for some time and Aoraki seemed to suit my needs.” The Level Three full-time course runs over 34 weeks. It is designed to provide students with all the skills needed to work in a commercial salon environment, including working with clients to advance their cutting, consultation, colouring and styling techniques.

“This year and last year have both been very challenging and equally rewarding,” says Ali. “I have enjoyed every minute of it and love working with the people that have come through the course so far.” For Ali the most rewarding part of her study has been an increase in her confidence levels and learning how to interact with the general public on a professional level. Aoraki Polytechnic’s tutors are involved and respected in the industry, and provide invaluable links for students to the industry itself. Ali is creating a portfolio of her work, which will play an important role when seeking an apprenticeship next year to complete her Year Three qualification. Students are encouraged to aim high, with Ali intending to follow her apprenticeship with a full time hairdressing position. “My long term ambition is to open my own salon,” says Ali. Qualifications in hairdressing are available at Aoraki Polytechnic’s Timaru, Dunedin and Christchurch campuses. Visit www.aoraki.ac.nz or call 0800 426 725 for more information on getting your career underway.

ARTISTIC ENERGY By Larissa Mcmillan

hen a friend recommended Jonathan Milne’s book ‘Go! The Art of Change’ to Anne Bannock, she looked into studying at The Learning Connexion the school of art and creativity, based in Wellington which Jonathan founded and directs. She realised that its study-fromhome part-time option suited her down to a tee. “My life-long ambition was to go to an art school and to be part of the creative energy that goes with it.” “Enter a new world of understanding modern art and new ideas,” Anne said. Situated in picturesque Ngatimoti, artist Anne Bannock has made a studio retreat that caters to her creativity and to the public. “My studio is a converted cow shed which serves as my studio and gallery, and is open to the public in the summer.” The Advanced Diploma programme has been the best programme of study for Anne to follow, allowing her to discover new techniques and skills to add to her extensive creative repertoire. “Everyone I have met has been helpful, especially the tutors. I have met some students when I attended a block class and now I follow their progress via the magic of the workroom, TLC’s online student forum.” If you’d like to enquire about studying at The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity, call us on 0800 278 769, or email us at admissions@tlc.ac.nz.

earning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe workplace, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? Not all workplaces are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high-risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours’ duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight-hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover

The majority of injuries occur outside of the workplace; in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. Fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12-hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. In times of emergency, such as the Canterbury earthquakes, many people were called upon to do first aid in a situation well beyond their comfort zone. This is the community resilience that we as good citizens should be trained for. Lives were saved as ordinary people pushed themselves into a role that they never expected. It is not difficult, and courses are not complicated. But one day, you will be called upon to help someone in need. Will you know what to do? If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

GARDENING

Dwarfing delphiniums BY TOD PALENSKI

For me, the key to making your garden look visually appealing is to include plants in a range of sizes. If you’ve already got your small plants covered and it’s height you’re after, look no further than the delphinium, which can grow to around 180cm tall. Beautiful and elegant, bold and statuesque, delphiniums are certainly no shrinking violets. Quite the opposite, in fact, with the flowers perfectly designed to play a leading role in your garden. You’ll be sure to love the colours too, with the plant’s dense leaves sprouting flowers ranging from traditional blues right through to lilac, pink, yellow and white. Not only striking, delphiniums are easy to grow, with the hardy perennials flowering from late spring to late autumn, year after year. They’re versatile too, working well in pretty, country gardens as well as modern or stately, sculptural ones (plant next to hostas, canna lilies and cardoons, and throw in some river stones for a bit of a contemporary look). Convinced? Grab some seedlings. When you’re ready to plant, choose a sunny, well-drained area with rich soil. Dig in a good quality compost and animal manure fertiliser, or garden galore, and add plenty of mulch to stop weeds forming and retain soil moisture. I prefer a soft mulch, like pea straw, which will rot down over time and feed the soil. And if you want to deter those delphinium-hungry snails, cover

STRIKING: Delphiniums flower from late spring to late autumn. the mulch with a rough bark as these little critters find it difficult to cross the bumpy terrain. Don’t have time for a full garden makeover? Simply plant some of our dwarf pure white delphiniums in black

Their first ever full length album – BE MINE TONIGHT – will be released on iTunes and via all good record stores on November 7th. As a special sneak peek into the fabulousness to be found on the album, three songs - Be Mine Tonight, Today Is Gonna Be Mine and the lead single Wake Up - are now available to stream on the Orchestra's website. Named after the classic song by Th' Dudes, the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra's album BE MINE TONIGHT pays homage to great songwriters and performers from the past 100 years of NZ music, from Princess Te Rangi Pai's 1907 lullaby Hine e Hine (the “Goodnight Kiwi song”) to Lorde's 2013 mega-hit Team. Wake Up is of course Aaradhna's hit single, and Today Is Gonna Be Mine comes from Dunedin legend David Kilgour. In addition to the outstanding set of recordings, the band's stage show is famous for madcap hilarity and spontaneous audience participation. Behind the hijinks is a finely-tuned musical group who have truly cemented their place on New Zealand's entertainment scene. The band will tour BE MINE TONIGHT around New Zealand this November and will be joined by regular guest-star Amanda Billing (Shortland Street's recently departed Sarah Potts), whose impressive vocal skills feature all over the album.
